I got a chance to visit Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, MD a few years back during the Fall Season. It was a cold day, but there was plenty of sunlight and a gorgeous blue sky working for me. Green Mount Cemetery was one of the earliest rural or garden cemeteries in the United States and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The layout of this cemetery is quite stunning to say the least, with tall, cobble stone walls surrounding the entire cemetery and containing a large amount of tall, massive trees that look like they are over a hundred years old. Both "Red" and "Guadalupe" images were taken on this day.
"Red" caught my attention as the kneeling angel statues had bright red and bright green leaves in the background. It was in the early weeks of fall so the fall colors were just starting to boom. I thought that the background of the green and red made her look stunning. Despite the cool weather, I had a very peaceful time walking around the cemetery and admiring all of the angels I saw throughout the day. I feel that in some ways, cemeteries are outdoor art museums, so much details, thought, and skill goes into these headstones. Truly beautiful to look at with the fall colors of yellow and red booming all around.
“Guadalupe” was quite the surprise and truly a treat to photograph. I came across a mausoleum with a beautiful angel on the ceiling, looking over the deceased. I took a picture of the angel, admiring the beautifully detailed wings and dress. I soon realized there was another statue inside the mausoleum that I could clearly see, so I walked closer and realized there was a weeping angel looking over the family members. It's probably the first that I was able to see one inside very closely and clearly because of the iron gate, many times there are metal gates and I can take a glimpse inside but never a close, clear view. This was truly a beautiful sigh to see.
"Broken Wing" was taken during my visit to Mount Olivet Cemetery in D.C. during the winter of 2017. It was already a cold, gloomy, and overcast kind of day, so I decided to photography in black and white instead of color. The Angel is standing on top a tall pillar / column so at first it was hard for me to fully appreciate how beautiful it is. I'm glad that my camera can zoom out 50x so I can clearly get a lot of details that my own eyes can't see. Though it was rather chilly outside that day, I'm glad I still took the opportunity to walk around and enjoy the peaceful silence at the cemetery.
"Metal Rose" was taken at my favorite cemetery so far, at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore. I usually visit historical cemeteries during the month of October and well past late winter in March to avoid the summer heat and enjoy a longer, peaceful cemetery walk. I really enjoyed taking photographs of this metal statue with the bright blue sky in the background on a cool October day. I really loved photographing the rose that has that beautiful patina color with a bit of rust to really give a beautiful contrast in color.
I hope that my photography was able to capture what I saw and experienced on that day and that I was able to share these experience with you. More importantly, I hope that the greeting cards brighten up your day!
