I find cemeteries to be some, if not, the most peaceful places to visit. Cemeteries are quiet, peaceful, and often surrounded by so much greenery and nature.

Most rural cemeteries were built at a time when there weren’t public parks, art museums, or botanical gardens in American cities. Walking through a historical cemetery is very much like waking through an outdoor art museum of beautiful and unique sculptures made of stone or metal. Mausoleums are a form of artwork, each one has a beautifully unique architecture and style. Suddenly you find yourself surrounded by large pieces of ground, filled with beautiful sculptures and horticultural art.

Cemeteries can provide a great place for quiet reflection. I hope my photography captures these elements for you to enjoy.

“Metal Rose” was taken at my favorite cemetery so far, at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore. I usually visit historical cemeteries during the month of October and well past late winter in March to avoid the summer heat and enjoy a longer, peaceful cemetery walk. I really enjoyed taking photographs of this metal statue with the bright blue sky in the background on a cool October day. I really loved photographing the rose that has that beautiful patina color with a bit of rust to really give a beautiful contrast in color.

“Pink Flower Bee” photo was taken at the United States National Arboretum in D.C. I’ve been very fortunate to “bee” able to capture so many magical moments in D.C. Arboretum. The “Pink Flower Bee” image was taken in the Asian Collections, in the Camellia Collections area during the later part of March. The area is quite whimsical in which the area begins to slope down to the Anacostia River, so you get to view a quite large diversity of plants and flowers during the entire year. It’s one of my favorite parts of the Arboretum because each part of the Asian Collections offers something different to experience throughout the entire year. The Camellia Collection begins flowering mid-autumn and continues through winter into spring. It was quite the treat to see flowers blooming in March and watching bees doing their busy bee work.

“Purple Prince” flower was taken at the United States National Arboretum in D.C. I don’t remember if I took this image in the Spring or Summer, my mind was very distracted with the recent passing of the singer/songwriter/musician/dancer…you get the picture, he was very talented human being Prince Rogers Nelson also knows as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. What caught my attention about this flower, is how it has this subtle, translucent pedals, but yet you can still clearly view the pastel purple color of the flower. The color purple of course reminded me of Prince and his famous song titled “purple rain”. I caught this image for both the beauty of the flower as I have never seen one before and truly haven’t seen it again but I’m sure it still blooms in the Arboretum, I just haven’t caught it again. And also because the color reminded me of a special human being who had recently passed away, so I named it “Purple Prince”.

“Purple Fuzz” was taken right outside the U.S. Capitol Grounds at the National Mall in D.C. It was a warm Spring day a few years back and it was my first time visiting the area in the Spring. The grounds have many monuments, flower beds, decorative fountains to looks at. I spent about 8 hours walking around the National Mall and toward the end of my day, I decided to take a quick break next to a large tree. As I’m eating my snacks and people watching for a bit while I rest, I looked up and didn’t realize the tree I was sitting under was blooming with these beautiful purple flowers. Always need to look around, even up and down, to really appreciate the beauty that surrounds you every day.

One of my favorite things to photographs are bees! They truly have a funny way of flying from flower to flower being busy little bees. On a personal note, I'm allergic to bee and yellow jacket stings so it's important to carry an epi-pen with me at all times. Doesn't stop me from photographing bees in gardens and arboretums.

I hope that my photography was able to capture what I saw and experienced on that day and that I was able to share these experience with you. More importantly, I hope that the greeting cards brighten up your day!
