Both "Pink Flower Bee" and "Bee Feet" photos were taken at the United States National Arboretum in D.C. I’ve been very fortunate to "bee" able to capture so many magical moments in D.C. Arboretum. The "Pink Flower Bee" image was taken in the Asian Collections, in the Camellia Collections area during the later part of March. The area is quite whimsical in which the area begins to slope down to the Anacostia River, so you get to view a quite large diversity of plants and flowers during the entire year. It’s one of my favorite parts of the Arboretum because each part of the Asian Collections offers something different to experience throughout the entire year. The Camellia Collection begins flowering mid-autumn and continues through winter into spring. It was quite the treat to see flowers blooming in March and watching bees doing their busy bee work.
The "Bee Feet" photo was taken in the National Herb Garden Area in D.C. Arboretum. I took this image only a few weeks after taking the "Pink Flower Bee" image and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of flowers that were beginning to blossom in the Herb Garden Area. I took several images of this pleasantly plump bee, one of the my favorite images, how plump this bee is and how his feet are so wide apart! This is probably the cutest bee I’ve ever seen! I just smile and giggle every time I see this image.
The "Purple Bumblebee" picture was taken outside the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia, PA. It was my first time visiting the museum and I was truly excited to view The Gates of Hell and boy is that piece of art so massive and so much detail. After I viewed all of the artwork, I sat outside the Dorrance H. Hamilton Garden to soak in the summer vibe. It was truly a hot summer day in August, and I sat outside drinking water, and was looking and admiring the fountain in the garden that has a small reflection pool. As I’m taking images of this fountain, I was distracted by this little bumblebee. I watched this little bee fly from flower to flower. I truly enjoyed the moment watching this bee fly around and landing so delicately on each flower, so much so, that eventually I picked up the camera again to take a few pictures of the bee.
"Mellow Bumblebee" was truly a challenging photography experience for me. I have always known that I am allergic to bee stings from my early childhood, so as a precaution I always carry an Epi-pen with me. Even though, if I were to get stung by a bee, it does not necessarily mean I would have a severe allergic reaction like I did during my childhood. However, a couple of months prior to taking this image, I was out hiking with a friend, when I unfortunately stepped near a yellow wasp nest on the ground. Some say it was probably yellow jackets, I do not know for sure. All I know is that they were yellow, their nest was underground and they were mean. But since I stepped very near their nest, I was stung over 30 times on both legs and ankles. Lucky for me, we were near a stream of water so I was able to run into the water to drown them. I'll never forget picking dead wasps that remained stuck on my socks and pants. I'm grateful that I was wearing pants and boots during the hot summer days and carry a backpack as that added a lot of protection against nature. Fast forward to Clear Meadow Farm in Harford County, I attended their “Sunflowers in Jarrettsville” event. The farm usually plants sunflowers for summer and fall on a small section of their farmland. After having such an awful experience with wasps, I was very nervous about walking around so many sunflowers that seemed to be full of bees and butterflies. I ended up having a great time with a friend photographing so many sunflowers and so many bees. Even though I'm still shy around them, I would photograph them in a heartbeat.
Bees are truly beautiful creatures. They seem to dance from flower to flower, hover over, and delicately land on them. They truly capture my attention whenever I see one. I hope that my photography was able to capture what I saw and experienced on that day and that I was able to share these experience with you. More importantly, I hope that the greeting cards brighten up your day!
