I got a chance to visit Mount Olivet Cemetery in D.C. during the winter of 2017. It was already a cold, gloomy, and overcast kind of day where the sky seem bright white, very plain. "Broken Wing” was taken on this day, I chose to use black and white because on an overcast day, it makes the details really stand out and overall the image comes out more crips and clear.
“Cross” was taken during the fall, on a gloomy, cold, clamp kinda day. The natural lighting wasn’t working for me on that day either, so I decided to photograph in black and white. Allegheny Cemetery is a massive historic rural cemetery which is one of the largest and oldest burial grounds in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I spent about 6 hours walking around, photographing and really soaking in the landscape and outdoor artwork. Many of these massive and very detailed stone sculptures sit on tall pillars or columns for what seems like 20’ in height. Literally these massive cemetery angels seem to touch the heavens.
On a hot summer day, while visiting the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in D.C., I got a chance to watch what seemed hundreds of dragonflies of all colors flying from lotus flowers to water lilies. They seemed to have this beautiful, delicate dance as they flew from one flower to the next. Watching their translucent and iridescent wings made me think of them as colorful fairies. I was able to capture so many wonderful images on this day including "Hold On Dragonfly" and "Blue Dragonfly".
I hope that my photography was able to capture what I saw and experienced on those days I'll always remember, and that I was able to share those experience with you through my photography. More importantly, I hope that the greeting cards brighten up your day!
